Deploying the SCANTRAWL system
Two oil spill response systems have been selected to be on standby during an upcoming drilling program by Murphy Oil off the Western Australian coast.
In December, Matt and Kev from PPS joined a broader team for Murphy Oil’s spill exercise, which provided response personnel with a briefing, along with the practical deployment of the two systems.
Day one involved an explanation and demonstration of the equipment on dry-land. Key safety and job hazard analyses were discussed with job roles assigned.
Day two involved the practical deployment of the equipment at sea, launched from vessels managed by Bass Marine based in Dongara.
The first piece of equipment to be deployed was Desmi’s SCANTRAWL system. The SCANTRAWL system is ideal for heavy oils and emulsions and was chosen specifically for the type of oil that would be released should an incident happen.
The SCANTRAWL system uses two wing-like structures comprising Desmi RO-BOOM to sweep and guide floating tar balls and fuel oils into specially designed nets. These nets capture and store the oil for recovery.
Bass Marine personnel were trained as First Strike members. A combined team from Perth Petroleum Services and Desmi’s training team from Denmark acted as trainers and observers for the exercise.
